Today I accomplished one of my life goals.
I've always wants to run a 5K and today I did it-thanks to much encouragement from my friend, Tina! I ran/walked the Heart for Haiti 5K in 42 minutes and 34 seconds. (That's pretty good I think since I haven't ran in over 6 months!)
Wednesday evening our small group got together to help Andrea get organized for the race she was putting on. (Andrea works for Mission of Hope here in Oklahoma.) We made the goody bags for the runners. As we were rolling the t-shirts, Tina told me she had already signed up to run. I told her I have always wanted to run a 5K (3.2 miles), but was always intimidated. (For why I do not know. Insecurity I suppose.) She invited me to join her and her mom, so I did! And the best part is all the proceeds go to support Mission of Hope in Haiti! After all this time, people still remember and desire to help the nation of Haiti.
There were at least 200 people there. Some runners; some walkers. People of all ages: pre-teen to 65. I checked in, got my goody bag (and thought of my small group when I did. *smile*) and tied a microchip to my shoe (in case I passed out during the run which I about did! Kidding.) We all lined up and BANG, the gun fired. Tina and I looked at each other and I said, "Do we run?" She didn't have time to respond because everyone around us started running!!
About halfway through, I jogged ahead turning on my workout music and getting in the zone. (It's like I'm some professional runner or something talking about "the zone". Ha!) As I ran, I'd set mini goals for myself to keep going. "Run to the sign." Run...Run...Run...Pant...Pant....About die...Walk...walk...walk..."Run to the corner."
Of course I made sure I ran across the finish line!! Panera Bread, Chik-fil-A and Sonic catered, so I got my grub on after the intentional throw up feeling passed. We stayed for the awards. The fastest male time was 17:06! Incredible. They did not announce the fastest female...It wasn't me. Don't worry. Our friend, Adam, placed 3rd for his age division and my best friend's mom, Jeanne, placed first in her age division! I snagged a extra free shirt for Cody. Andrea gave me a medal for my first 5K. (I really think I only got one because there were extras and she's my friend, but whatever works 'cause I have a cool memento of my first run!)
Needless to say, it was a lot of hard, hard "fun". I'm out of shape. And I know I'll be doped up on ibuprofen starting tomorrow once the pain sets in. BUT it's just what I needed to get myself back to exercising. I can't wait to do my next 5K again and this time, I have a new goal: Do it in under 40 minutes!!
